Murphy (aka Murphy the Warrior, June/2019) is the family’s male German Short-Haired Pointer. He is a pup of Gracie’s littermate. Like Gracie, he is also an outstanding hunting dog. But while Gracie is more of an “Olympic” athlete covering tons of ground, Murphy is a bit slower but more methodical. He has a fantastic nose for birds. We always thought Gracie had the “best” nose for finding birds, but as Murphy got older, he slightly edged her out. If he goes on point, you know there is a bird there. His favorite thing is to be outside whenever anyone else is outside. He loves to just run in our backyard or lay on the deck in the sun. He, of course, loves to fetch, but his agility is not as athletic as Gracie’s. She usually beats him to the ball or catches it mid-air. And he rarely catches a frisbee unless she is inside the house. Murphy is a lover. He wants to be a lap dog, but he realizes he is too big. So instead, he will come, lay his head on your lap, and give a big sigh. When he wants outside, he will sit and stare at you and then maybe put his paw on your knee. Once he knows he is going outside, he spins in excited circles. He also loves to “talk” when we come home from being gone. It is like he is saying, “I am so glad you are home.” When Murphy is at the office, he makes the rounds to all the people to say hello. He greets visitors warmly. And if someone is getting ice for their drink, he follows, and they give him an ice cube, as he thinks they are treats.
